Award-Winning Chemical Risk Assessment Company, Rillea Technologies, Finds Business Support in the Bay of Quinte

January 18, 2019

Rillea Technologies is the creator of the SDS RiskAssist™ web app and winner of a 2018 Reader’s Choice Award from Canadian Occupational Safety Magazine. They are also a Bay of Quinte company. CEO Lisa Hallsworth and COO Rob Hallsworth were attracted to the area as an affordable place to raise a family, but they’ve also found that the Bay of Quinte is a great place to do business.

With clients located from Sarnia to Ottawa, the Bay of Quinte is a great place to be. As a digital technology business, Lisa and Rob can serve their customers remotely, allowing them to enjoy all the benefits of living in the beautiful Bay of Quinte area.

After creating the SDS RiskAssist™ web app, Rillea Technologies needed beta testers and early adopters to use the product and give them feedback. Lisa explains, “Early adopters are key to any business, giving you feedback, testimonials and case studies for credibility but they are very hard to find, making up only 2.5% of the population. ”

“Many people move to more populated areas like Toronto to find early adopters but the Bay of Quinte Area is very innovative and with support from the Quinte Economic Development Commission (QEDC), we were able to find our early adopters, such as Loyalist College, the County of Lennox and Addington and the cities of Belleville and Quinte West, RCI and GH Manufacturing, right at home! This credibility has allowed us to reach for larger clients, such as the Regional Municipality of Durham, our most recent customer!” – Rillea Technologies

QEDC provided additional support to Rillea Technologies through connection to the following resources:

  • Launch Lab, which provides assistance to technology companies looking to commercialize or expand
  • The Small Business Centre, which provides free, confidential business information and assistance
  • Quinte Manufacturers Association (QMA), run by manufacturing leaders in the Greater Bay of Quinte Region, the organization drives progress in local industry
  • Manufacturing Resource Centre (MRC), a program of the QEDC that supports manufacturers in Belleville, Quinte West and Brighton, as well as the surrounding area
  • The Quinte Business Development Centre (QBDC), “a group of Bay of Quinte organizations located in one building to offer business development services to: startups, companies relocating, and existing companies.”

Rillea Technologies also belongs to an informal technology group run by the Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP). “The local IRAP representative is very helpful and the group often hosts different speakers. They keep in touch with what’s new and happening in Tech around the world,” explains Lisa.

All of this business support has allowed Lisa and Rob, both chemical engineers to focus on creating the SDS RiskAssist™ web app. The web app helps companies understand the chemicals they are using in their business. By understanding the hazards, people can make informed decisions. They can choose not to use the product or use a similar, less hazardous product or they can mitigate the hazards through using the right type of personal protective equipment (such as gloves or a respirator), knowing what chemicals to avoid mixing, and which chemicals must be used outside.

“SDS RiskAssist™ makes chemicals and their hazards searchable and sortable. It also compares your chemical collection to select local exposure regulations so that you can quickly assess where your biggest risks are. Company directives can easily be added to one-page summaries and communicated clearly to employees via the SDS RiskAssist™ web app, when and where they need it.” – Rillea Technologies Website

The United Nations (UN) developed Health and Safety regulations, which have been adopted by 72 countries around the world. Rillea Technologies’ software started in Ontario, and it’s applicable in those 72 countries globally.

Lisa and Rob are ready to bring responsible and effective chemical use to the world from their Bay of Quinte location with the award-winning SDS RiskAssist™ web app. “The structure exists here that we need and that supports us.”
