Elevating Quinte: QEDC & LTKC Partner to Provide Employment Training for Improvement of Local Economy

March 30, 2017

Building a strong, sustainable community in the Quinte area is a priority for the partnership between Quinte Economic Development Commission (QEDC) and Loyalist College’s Training and Knowledge Centre (LTKC). So our joint program, Elevate Plus, provides training to help employers and unemployed and underemployed workers fill well-paid positions in more permanent local work. It’s an ecosystem designed to offer sustainable support for both businesses and residents.

The Bay of Quinte has a large cluster of Ontario’s manufacturers. The Elevate Plus Program provides free training and support for workers to enter local manufacturing and food processing jobs. Four weeks of classroom training are followed by a two week job trial. The trial period gives both employer and employee a chance to see if it is a good fit, eliminating the major expenditure, of finances and time, typically spent on the hiring process.

Manufacturing employers are encouraged to partner in the Elevate Plus Program by hosting placements, which often turn into permanent employment. When placements lead to permanent employment, the manufacturer knows they are gaining an employee who is already trained and a good fit for their staff team.

To date, 11 participants have graduated from the first cohort of the Elevate Plus Program and all have found employment. The new provincial funding provides spaces for 120 workers to be trained and placed in food processing, manufacturing and logistics positions. Employees feel confident to start their permanent employment, knowing that they have received targeted training, which they can now successfully apply.

Increased retention rates result in high participant and client partner satisfaction rates. The Elevate Plus Program helps people stay in the area where they want to live, by providing an opportunity to support themselves and their families, and elevate Quinte to reach its full potential.  More at
