Donini Chocolate is celebrating 65 years of excellence in the chocolate industry at their flagship location in Belleville.

In celebration of its milestone anniversary, Donini Chocolate hosted their official anniversary event on Friday October 2nd where Mayor Taso Christopher was on hand for a ribbon cutting ceremony and on Saturday October 3rd, Donini held a Live Radio Broadcasting with free prize giveaways.

Donini Chocolate at 335 Bell Blvd, opened its doors in 1980 but before the Friendly City got its first taste of an old-world chocolate recipe the company started in a city near Milan, Italy.

Nello Donini began a career as a chocolatier at the early age of 10-years-old by working in many factories in Milan.

In 1950, Donini opened its doors as an artisan novelty chocolate store that catered to the children and the holidays under the name Cioccolato Donini.

After many years of success in Italy the Donini family traveled to Canada.

Traveling around Ontario in just three weeks the family saw the potential and opportunities for relocation to Canada.

With help from the government, potential sites were outlined in Belleville, Trenton, Brockville and Kingston, the family chose the Friendly City as their new home and a chocolate destination for chocolate lovers around Ontario.

Vigilio Salvoni, senior manager said Donini Chocolate was run by the original family until 2009.

“Another Italian family took over the ownership from then on and continue in the tradition with the same pride and enthusiasm as the original family,” he said.

Since its move into Canada, Donini Chocolate has expanded by supplying chocolate to large bakeries, hotel chains and small seasonal chocolate users.

“A big part of our production today relates to the supply of liquid chocolate for other companies. From our factory we ship an average of two tankers of liquid chocolate every week,” said Vigilio.

However, it’s not every day a company experiences 65 years of success and Vigilio acknowledges the tremendous milestone.

“We feel overwhelmed, but also proud of the achievements of this company during the 65 years of its existence. During 65 years we’ve grown from a small artisan lab in the city of Vigevano (Italy) to a well established small chocolate business in the North American market,” he said.
